Perfectly Imperfect Produce

America loses up to 40% of its food from farm to fork to landfill. Vegetables and fruit are thrown out because they are ugly, misshapen, bruised, or simply not perfect enough to make it to the grocery store or your table. This wasted food is responsible for using 25% of the freshwater in the U.S., contributing to 21% of municipal solid waste, and account for 16% of U.S. methane emissions.

Meanwhile, some 795 million people go hungry everyday. Goji saves this perfectly nutritious and always fresh imperfect produce from ending up in the landfill through innovative partnerships with our suppliers. We turn all of that goodness into healthy and delicious juice.

THE FOOD WASTE JOURNEY

There are a number of reasons why fruits and vegetables go to waste before they even reach the consumer. Here's a few of them:

Picture
Production Losses

There are many reasons why produce can go to waste on the farm. One reason is that farmers often selectively harvest, leaving produce behind that won't meet minimum quality standards for shape, size, color, and time to ripeness. Another reason is that food goes unharvested due to economic conditions like low food prices and labor shortages that make harvesting economically difficult.
Picture
Post-harvest + Storage Losses

After harvest the primary loss of produce is culling, which means removal of fruits and vegetables that are misshapen or blemished, or do not meet size and weight requirements for the market. Losses also occur when produce isn't stored properly (ex. potatoes through winter).
Picture
Processing + Packaging Losses

Oftentimes processing facilities trim edible and inedible portions of food off creating significant losses. Damage to fruits and vegetables can often happen at this stage due to handling and packaging damage.
Picture
Distribution + Retail Losses

Produce faces a lot of rejection once it gets to the grocery store. There is a large problem with grocers rejecting perishable fruits and vegetables because they don't meet the grocer's standards or the quantity is too high to handle,. Rejected shipments will be thrown out if no other buyer can be found in time. The rejection continues as customers sort through produce for cosmetic perfection. Too ugly? Too bad.
